Why is it so important if a few athletes used steroids???
It seems pretty clear that several "great" ball players have used steriods.... and it is wrong. And it is a crime, but is that really something that deserves tax dollars, federal investigations, and congressional hearings? Can anyone really tell me that it is so important that Clemens is found gulity for injecting steriods instead of congress spending time working on all the issues that really is the responsibility of congress? With all the problems this nation has such as health care, the foreclosure crisis, social security, the war in Iraq, a nuclear Iran and North Korea, etc. why is our government spending so much time investigating baseball, steroids, and "illegal" taping of NFL games? Congress has long been letting the American people down and this is just another example of how they never seem to do the job they were elected to do. I am not missing the point at all. I have no problem with anyone going to jail for illegal use of steriods.... and it is a crime to lie under oath. my question is when did it become an issue for the United States Congress? We have federal courts and prosecutors for this and Congress should be tackling bigger issues rather than if an individual did steriods OR as a couple stated, lied under oath.

- I think you misunderstand. The only reason it is a huge investigation is because the player in question has filed a defamation law suit agianst the person who is accusing. In the case of Roger Clemens he has summond lawyers and is filing suit to clear his name. If he is now found guilty of using steriods, nothing legal really happens to him. If he is found to have lied under Oath, then he will definately be punished by obstrusting congress. Really, this is Roger's fault for calling mass attention to it in an attempt to try and clear his name when all evidence points to him actually using it by doing 100's of interviews and press conferences.
- It isn't important at all.
- When something like an industry that big has so many people riding on the outcome they will raise 7 kinds of HELL till congress has to do something. They are sometimes forced into these things. They have so much on there plate they don't go around looking for stuff people hire lawyers who take things to the floor and force the issue. You are missing the whole point, it's not hard to understand! The whole point a person uses steroids is to alter their strength, so if only a few players used them it would make the game unfair in all aspects don't you think? It's not just the point of taking them, its the affect it has. So that is why it is illegal in the first place, for any athlete to use them, if one does then it is not fair to the rest. That is a big money industry & a lot of things rides on who wins. Everybody is overlooking the reason why steroids are illegal, they are making it all about government & congress it has nothing to do with that at all! A good comparison example would be weight lifting, thats like putting a small tiny man in the same weight category as a big pumped burly man, its would not be fair. There has to be some rules about everything or the whole world be be total chaos!!!! If your not trying to understand the whole picture then you are not thinking very clearly!
- i think steroids are stupid luv u all, Happy Valentines Day!
- I don't see what the big deal is either. I agree with you.
- What's the big deal if you spend two weeks studying for finals and someone else gets a great grade by copying the answers off somebody else's paper?
- It's not congresses job to regulate the game you moron. And using steroids ruins the spirit of the game. Your a woman so you wouldn't understand.
- I agree and wish I could slap them all in the face and say "do you job!" Our founding fathers would be extremely disappointed in what is happening in/to America these days.
- I agree 100% focus on the real issues not sport congress comeon we have been in iraq longer then invovled in WW2
- Basically, because the govt is like the mafia. Baseball is a cash cow for them, a serious money-making entitiy. They don't want baseball to get hurt where it counts, as in revenue stream. If people are turned off, they don't go as often, which means people don't watch as often, which means advertisers begin to pull out. All of these advertisers, and baseball execs themselves are major lobbyists (money givers), to the govt., and they don't want to see that get messed up!
- thats so true. i think its so unfair how sports players make the most money, which doesnt really end up benefitting the world in anyway, unless they like donate the money.
- its not so much the use of steroids ( even though that is not aloud in the MLB) but its when they lie in court and than they get in trouble, because lying under oath is illegal
- This is a rhetorical question. So yes..I agree.
- You've asked a great question. And I can't give you a good answer. Furthermore, I can't understand why baseball can't just write the issue off and move forward. As much a everyone wants to blame the players, I think just as much (if not more) blame needs to be laid at the feet of the MLB owners. The turned a blind eye and a deaf ear on the problem while lining their pockets with the increased revenue from fans packing ball parks to see record setting home runs and what not. And since Congress is so intent on having hearings on the matter, why don't we see more of Bud Selig and owners getting grilled for ignoring the problem until after a bone head ex-player wrote a book.
- Ever read about the 1919 World series"Black Sox" scandal? It blighted the game for 20-30 years because of "Cheating".The movie "Field of Dreams "describes how the players felt about it after being banned for life. What if somebody broke your all time best with a pill in his mouth? It takes away the legends of the game and diminishes them.Ask Pete Rose about his gambling habit on his own team.He was banned from the game.............
- It is important they are breaking the law, but is it important enough to warrant congressional hearing's I don't think so! Should something be done about it yes as the players weather they want to be or not are roll models for our children and I personally do not want my kids using any kind of drug, I would prefer they win on their own merits and not because they have used some sort of performance enhancing drug....The Congress and Senate have let the American people down in more ways than this one..They all need to be sent packing and new people not career politicians need to be sent in their places......
- That's a great question. While I'm not in favor of the Congressional oversight of the issue, I do admit that committee does have the overall job of controlling drug use in society and among youth. So while there is obvious grandstanding going on, I am happy that highly paid athletes who have been given so many things in life, are being called to the carpet by our represenatives. I think it will change the drug culture in the game and we should all be happy about that. Also -- steroids to more than make you stronger. They help you to recover from wear and tear of strenuous activity. I feel bad for the young players or journeymen who were pushed out by some aging athletes who enjoyed an extra season or two because of steroids and HGH.
- The illegal video's of games should be ignored by the congress, but i believe that the steroid issue should at least be looked into. Maybe not to the extent that they have taken it , but looked at and passed on to the correct government agency, I.E. DEA. The reason being is that weather we like it or not sports play a major role in our society especially in today's young people who look to sports as the way to stardom. We can not stand by while the heroes of our kids (not saying it should be this way) live a public lifestyle full of rampant steroid use. It can be debated weather or not steroid use by grown men is bad or good. What cant be debated is weather or not its harmful for the the 12 year old boy or girl trying to "make it" in sports to uses steroids. With out a doubt we as a society have the obligation to protect our children( should be the parents but that is for another thread). That is why i think it is important for the government to look into the rampant steroid use in baseball.
- I've wondered this myself. I think Congress has more important things to worry about. Unless some major federal crime has been committed, they should stay away from sports.
- This should never have gone to Congress. Roger Clemens wanted the biggest arena in the country to prove his innocence. He got what he was after but there was a problem he wasn't innocent.
- To me baseball is more important then all that other bullsh*t you mentioned. I think it has to do with the whole "war against drugs" thing. When I grew up I always wanted to be a pro baseball player, but I realized I would never bo good enough. The thing is some guys grow up and it's their dream to play big league ball, and these guy who cheat with steroids steal their dreams.
- It is to crack down the cheaters
- the government is a bunch of racist fools
- It is very important that Congress investigate. Baseball needs to come clean and start over or the sport will be done for good. Don't let a few who cheated ruin the great sport of baseball.
- Because it gives some athletes an unfair advantage and it sets a bad example to kids who look up to these players.
