Is the foreclosure law in Mo.different than in Illinois in relation to being behind on 2nd, Current on 1st.?

We're 2 months behind on our 2nd. Homecomings Financial (holders of the 2nd) told us we had to fall behind 2 months before they would even talk with us about loss mitigation. Now that we are behind they seem unwilling to talk with us about any hardship options. How long does the typical foreclosure process take? Are we talking a month or a few months?
